Tokyo Olympics 2020: 2nd Loss For Indian Women Hockey Team

The Indian athletes had a terrible day at the Tokyo Games on Monday, culminating in a 0-2 setback for the Indian women’s hockey team. Following a 5-1 thrashing by the Netherlands, this was India’s second straight loss in Pool A. India has dropped to the bottom of Pool A as a result of the loss.

Boxer Ashish Kumar Chaudhary was knocked out in the Round of 32 against Erbieke Tuoheta of China in the men’s Middle (69-75kg) category earlier in the day. Manika Batra, an Indian star player, was also eliminated after losing in straight games against Sofia Polcanova of Austria in the third round of the women’s singles.

The highlight of the day for India was Sharath Kamal’s 4-2 victory over Portugal’s Tiago Apolonia in Round 2 of the men’s singles table tennis event.

Sumit Nagal, an Indian tennis player, was eliminated from the men’s singles tournament after losing in straight sets to Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the second round. The Indian archery team of Atanu Das, Pravin Jadhav, and Tarundeep Rai fell 0-6 to South Korea in the quarterfinals of the men’s team event. The Indian team had advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Kazakhstan 6-2 earlier in the tournament, but the Korean team proved too strong.

India’s bad luck continued when Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost their men’s doubles badminton match to Indonesians Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo in straight games, 21-13 21-12. In the Women’s Sabre Individual Table Of 32, Indian fencer Bhavani Devi was knocked out by France’s Manon Brunet 7-15 after winning earlier in the day. Angad Vir Singh Bajwa (Rank 18) and Mairaj Ahmad Khan (Rank 25) failed to qualify for the final in men’s shooting – Skeet Men’s Qualification. After losing to the Netherlands in their Olympic opener, India’s women’s hockey team will face Germany in their Pool A match.
