On Thursday, Indian wrestler Ravi Dahiya grabbed silver after losing 4-7 to ROC’s Zavur Uguev in the men’s freestyle 57kg final. In the gold medal match, Ravi Dahiya was behind 2-4 after the first period. Uguev then extended his lead to 7-2, but the Indian wrestler refused to give up, winning two points and cutting the gap to three points. Dahiya then attempted to gain extra points by going for the kill, but his Russian opponent’s defence held fast. In the end, the wrestler who gave it his all against the two-time world champion came agonisingly close to becoming India’s first Olympic gold medalist in wrestling suffered heartbreak.
Ravi Dahiya’s silver medal is India’s sixth at the Olympics in wrestling. Ravi Dahiya, after Sushil Kumar, became only the second Indian wrestler to earn silver at the Olympics with his second-place result. Sushil has won silver at the 2012 London Olympics.
Ravi Dahiya advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Colombia’s Tigreros Urbano in his 1/8 final match on Wednesday. He won the match with a score of 13-2.
Ravi proved to be too good for Georgi Valentino Vangelov in the last-eight match, defeating the Bulgarian 14-4.
In the semi-final match, Ravi faced Kazakhstan’s Nurislam Sanayev, and he was put on the back foot in the final three minutes, trailing 2-9 at one point.
In the second quarter, Ravi Dahiya made a great comeback to bring the score to 7-9. With only 40 seconds left in the match, the 23-year-old Indian wrestler pulled off a remarkable manoeuvre, pinning his opponent and securing a spot in the final by fall.
