On Saturday, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar informed reporters that a team of leaders from ten political parties would see Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday to demand a nationwide census based on caste.

For some time, Nitish Kumar, the de facto head of the Janata Dal (United), has been reiterating the demand for a caste-based Census.
Nitish Kumar took the lead in indicating otherwise after Union minister of state for home Nityanand Rai indicated in the Lok Sabha that the Centre will not enumerate the population based on caste.
“We believe there should be a caste-based census,” the Bihar chief minister tweeted on July 24. On February 17, 2019, and again on February 27, 2020, the Bihar legislature unanimously passed and forwarded to the central government a resolution to this effect. After his party’s national executive meeting in Delhi on July 31, he reinforced his demand. Nitish Kumar has indicated that he will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the subject of a caste-based Census.
He had stated that differing positions taken on the matter by his party and the BJP, which leads the Union government, will have no impact on the NDA partnership.
