Amid a leadership squabble, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel invites Rahul Gandhi to visit Chhattisgarh

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel met with Rahul Gandhi for more than three hours at his residence on Friday, and said the former Congress president will be visiting the state on his invitation. Party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, AICC general secretary KC Venugopal, and party in-charge PL Punia were also present during Baghel’s meetings at Rahul Gandhi’s home.

Following the meeting, the chief minister stated that he informed Rahul Gandhi everything he needed to know and that they reviewed the state’s politics and development plans that were implemented when the Congress took control in Chhattisgarh. When asked about the change of guard, he stated that the party’s in-charge for the state had already stated that there was a leadership dispute and that there was nothing more to say.

“I’ve spoken what I needed to say to my leader. I talked about politics with him and gave him an overview of the state’s policies and government. I invited him to visit the state, and he accepted, and he will be in the state next week “After the meeting, Baghel told reporters. When asked about the leadership transition, he stated, “The party’s in-charge for the state clarified the subject last time, and there is nothing more to say.”

Baghel met with Rahul Gandhi for the second time this week, after meeting with him on Tuesday amid speculation over a possible leadership transition in the state. Later, Baghel met with nearly 40 MLAs and ministers from Chhattisgarh who had come to show support for the chief minister. Baghel’s popularity was bolstered by these MPs, who wanted him to stay on as chief minister.

Punia was met at his home in the morning, and Venugopal was received at the AICC headquarters, where the chief minister was also present. On Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi met separately with T S Singh Deo, the health minister of Chhattisgarh.

On Wednesday, Baghel and Deo met with AICC general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal, amid speculation that Deo was seeking a leadership change as a result of disputes between the two state leaders. Trouble has been simmering in the Chhattisgarh Congress since Deo requested a leadership change in the wake of the party’s victory in the 2018 assembly elections, citing a power-sharing agreement on rotating chief ministership.
