The Bharatiya Janata Party-led administration in Uttar Pradesh has begun preparations to add 39 castes to the list of Other Backward Castes (OBC) in the state, months before the important 2022 Assembly elections. Jaswant Saini, the Chairman of the State Backward Classes Committee, has stated that the commission will soon give a report to the Uttar Pradesh government in this regard.
According to the information, the 39 castes which may be included in the OBC list include Bhutia, Agrahari, Dosar Vaish, Jaiswar Rajput, Ruhela, Muslim Shah, Muslim Kayastha, Hindu Kayastha, Barnwal, Kamalapuri Vaish, Core Kshatriya Rajput, Dohar, Ayodhyawasi Vaish, Kesarwani Vaish, Bagwan, Omar Bania, Mahour Vaish, Hindu Bhaat, Bhatt, Goria,
A survey of castes such as Vishnoi, Khar Rajput, Porwal, Puruwar, Kunder Kharadi, Binoudhia Vaish, Honorable Vaish, Gulhare Vaish, Gadhaiya, Radhedi, Pithbaj, and others is also required.
According to Saini, the effort of conducting a caste survey is ongoing on the basis of representation. A survey of 24 castes has been completed, with 15 castes still to be completed.
These castes are surveyed on a total of 35 factors, including education, population, and economic status. The State Backward Commission will make a proposal to the government after the survey work is completed. The government will make the final judgement on whether or not they should be included.

The decision to put 39 castes in the OBC list ahead of the UP elections could prove to be a masterstroke for the ruling BJP, which has been actively courting OBC support. This follows the central government’s announcement that OBCs will be given a 27 percent reservation in NEET. In Uttar Pradesh, the OBC community accounts for a sizable portion of the vote, which is why practically all parties are now focusing on OBC voters.
