Today, Delhi recorded over 15,000 coronavirus cases in 24 hours, the most since May 8. The number of daily cases in the national capital increased by 41.5 percent in a single day, with 15,097 illnesses recorded. This comes only one day after the city had its largest single-day surge in nearly eight months, with 10,665 cases. The percentage of people who are optimistic has topped 15%.
During the same time period, six deaths were reported.
Over the past several days, Delhi, one of the worst-affected states by the Covid epidemic, has been producing a tidal wave of cases, a spike that is thought to be caused by the virus’s highly transmissible Omicron version.
The increase in Covid cases has been paralleled by an increase in hospitalizations. According to the most recent data, the number of patients in Delhi hospitals jumped from 247 on January 1 to 531 on January 4. The number of patients on oxygen support has increased from 94 to 168 in the last three days, while those on ventilators has increased from four to fourteen, according to news agency PTI. In Delhi hospitals, 1,116 of the 12,104 oxygen beds for Covid patients are occupied, while 72 ICU beds with ventilators have patients.
State Health Minister Satyendar Jain had predicted earlier in the day that Delhi would likely record roughly 14,000 new cases today. The minister, on the other hand, ruled out a lockdown in the nation’s capital.
“In the last several days, the number of covid cases in Delhi has risen dramatically. Many more instances have arrived, and the total number of cases is expected to reach 14,000 today “According to Mr. Jain, the surge is due to intensified testing.
“We’re running the most testing possible throughout the country.”
The minister reassured Delhi residents about the city’s readiness to deal with the surge, saying the city is in a “comfortable situation” in terms of hospital bed occupancy.
“The death rate is currently 1 in 1,000. In comparison to the last time, the situation is fine. We had 9,000 free beds yesterday, and we now have 12,000, so our preparations are complete. We’ve completed about 90,000 tests so far “he stated
In the worst-case scenario, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal claimed his government is prepared to manage one lakh coronavirus infections each day. All private hospitals and nursing homes with more than 50 beds have been ordered by the city to set aside 40% of their standard beds and 40% of their ICU beds for Covid patients. At the moment, 14,937 patients are confined to their homes.
The city’s color-coded Graded Response Action Plan has already issued a red alert due to the increase in instances (GRAP). A weekend curfew has been imposed in Delhi and government offices are working from home to arrest the sudden spurt. Private offices are only allowed to operate at 50% capacity due to the constraints. To minimise long lines and crowding, buses and the Delhi metro are running at full capacity. To provide appropriate manpower in dealing with the Covid outbreak, all Delhi government employees and workers have had their leave cancelled.
There are 14,937 patients in home isolation in Delhi right now. The percentage of recovery is 96.19 percent.
