Germany To Reduce Embassy Staff In Kabul, Fly Out Staff And Helpers

Germany’s diplomatic staff in Kabul will be reduced to the absolute minimum, and security measures at the compound will be increased, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas announced on Friday, echoing similar pronouncements by the US and other Western governments.

“The government’s crisis coordination team also agreed to bring ahead charter flights that were initially scheduled for the end of August,” Maas told reporters in Denzlingen, Germany.

The goal, according to the minister, was to send out embassy personnel as well as local Afghan helpers on these planes. Afghans who do not have visas would receive their documents in Germany to expedite the procedure.
