In-charge of the Punjab Congress Harish Rawat claimed that Navjot Singh Sidhu was elevated to the position of Punjab Congress president with the party’s future in mind, but that Captain Amarinder Singh was still the chief minister under the current setup.
“Sidhu is from a different background. In Punjab, he was given responsibilities with the future in mind. However, this does not imply that Congress has been given to him; Amarinder is also there “As the Punjab Congress devolves deeper into factionalism, Harish Rawat says.
This comes just a day after Harish Rawat said that the Congress would run for Punjab Assembly in 2022 under Amarinder Singh’s leadership.
Four cabinet ministers met Harish Rawat in Dehradun earlier this week: Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, and Charanjit Singh Channi. The four ministers demanded that the chief minister be replaced, claiming that they had “lost faith in him” due to unfulfilled commitments.
According to sources, Harish Rawat listened intently to the grievances of the four unsatisfied top Punjab ministers. Rawat, on the other hand, indicated that the demand to replace Singh would not be granted.
In response, a top Congress official blasted the four ministers for demanding Amarinder Singh’s ouster as chief minister before of the 2019 Punjab elections.
According to a top Congress leader from Amarinder Singh’s camp, “Sidhu’s ambitions are quite high, despite having been granted more than he deserved. He’s ecstatic to get his hands on everything. When the elections were only a few months away, why was it necessary to demand Captain’s removal?”
According to sources, Amarinder Singh was dissatisfied with the work of the disgruntled ministers, who were also on the verge of losing their cabinet seats in the upcoming state cabinet enlargement.
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) slammed the Punjab Congress in response to the development.
“The ministers are merely attempting to distract public attention by orchestrating a mutiny. Why have they been deafeningly quiet for the past four and a half years? In truth, they are terrified of the public. If their worry is genuine, they should not demand a party ticket and should not run for office “Daljit Cheema, the SAD’s general secretary, stated.
