Speaker Om Birla is considering suspending at least 13 Congress and TMC MPs who have been recognised as “serial offenders” after incidences of shredding papers and hurling them on the chair as well as ministers.
When Rajendra Agarwal was the presiding officer, ripped papers rained down for several minutes, which was an affront to the chair. As a result, we anticipate the Speaker taking action against MPs who have misbehaved with the presiding officer,” a source added.
According to reports, the Speaker summoned some opposition leaders to his chamber and expressed his disapproval, warning that such behaviour would no longer be permitted.
According to sources, several of the MPs have been identified after video of the sessions was examined and their actions were judged to be unethical and insulting to the chair.
MPs from the Congress and the TMC tore papers and flung them towards the chair and parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
As opposition MPs, primarily from the Congress and the TMC, hurled papers at the chair and the parliamentary affairs minister, some ruling MPs became enraged and rose up.
Rajendra Agarwal, who was presiding in the zero hour, realised the gravity of the situation and postponed the house for half an hour. Senior ministers such as Narendra Singh Tomar, Piyush Goyal, Anurag Thakur, and Prakash Javadekar were seen huddled together, while another Union minister, Darshana Jardosh, was overheard remarking that such “unruly” behaviour could not be condoned and should be brought to the public’s attention.
Anurag Thakur, a Union minister, said Congress and TMC MPs sought to prevent Parliament from meeting on Wednesday.
“They can express their dissatisfaction, but it, too, has a limit. They tossed papers and displayed banners at the Speaker, ministers, and even the media gallery. “Why is the opposition avoiding discussions?” he wondered.
There is a method to protest, according to Thakur, but the opposition desecrated the dignity and decorum of our democracy’s temple on Wednesday. “By their despicable conduct, the opposition MPs have embarrassed the world’s largest democracy,” he added.
