Pullela Gopichand, the national badminton coach, complimented star shuttler PV Sindhu on her bronze medal performance at the Tokyo Olympics.
“Congrats to our awesome Sindhu on her 2nd successive Olympics medal, Gopichand said in a statement after Sindhu clinched the bronze by defeating He Bingjiao of China 21-13, 21-15.
“While it is all down to her and her team of trainers and support staff’s hard work, I also want to show my gratitude to the Sports Ministry, Indian Government, SAI, and BAI for their assistance,” said the former All England champion.
“I’d also like to thank the Telangana government for enabling the players to use the stadium, and it’s fantastic to watch badminton win medals in three consecutive games,” the coach added.
On Saturday, Sindhu was defeated in the semifinals by Tai Tzu of Chinese Taipei. Putting the disappointment behind her, she came back strong to win bronze.
She became the first Indian woman athlete to win two Olympic medals with this achievement. She had won silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics after losing in the final to Carolina Marin of Spain.
Sindhu began her training with Gopichand, who has served as the guiding force in Indian badminton for many years and was instrumental in her success. She began tutoring Kim Ji Hyun of South Korea in 2019. Park Tae Sang, a South Korean, is her current coach.
The shuttler recently left Gopichand Academy and began training at Indoor Stadium Gachibowli under Park Tae Sang.
