TMC MPs Abhishek Banerjee and Dola Sen, as well as other prominent party leaders, have been charged with “obstruction of police personnel” from carrying out their duties.
Tripura Police have also arrested Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee, Bengal minister Bratya Basu, and party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh.
According to the FIR, a group of TMC workers led by minister Bratya Basu and MP Dola Sen arrived to the Khowai police station on Sunday morning after the arrest of 14 TMC leaders and employees. Abhishek Banerjee arrived at the station shortly after.
According to the police, a number of TMC leaders misbehaved with the Additional SP and other police officers, shouting at them. The top TMC leaders have now been charged with misbehaving with the Additional SP and SDPO of Khowai, as well as hindering police personnel from performing their duties.
Abhishek Banerjee and TMC workers were beaten in separate events last week in Tripura, where the party is attempting to broaden its support ahead of the 2023 assembly elections.
Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, claimed that the recent attacks in Tripura on Abhishek Banerjee and others were carried out “on the orders” of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and that such acts “would not cow her down.”
The West Bengal BJP, on the other hand, dismissed the charge as “baseless,” claiming that Mamata Banerjee should be held responsible for post-election violence and the murder of its workers in the state if she followed Mamata Banerjee’s logic.
